Love Traveling, Love Reading - Bring a Picture Book Home from Your Journey
A picture book in your suitcase: an invitation to read the world.
What do you bring home from your journey?
Souvenir? Chocolates? Or a picture book that opens the world to children at home?
Bringing a picture book home for the library, you bring a piece of the world to our children.
Your journey ends with a loving thought; their world opens with your love.
"Love Traveling, Love Reading - Bring a Picture Book Home from Your Journey" is a project which involves adult readers in children's reading in Taiwan. Douliu is a small and remote district of Yunlin County, Taiwan, parts of which are impoverished and very traditional. In order to help bridge the cultural gap, Douliu City Library of Picture Books has organized a book-donation for the children in Douliu City, to encourage the citizens to bring one picture book back from their travels, and then donate the book to Douliu City Library. Through children reading picture books of other countries, this project hopes to expand their world view
The purpose of the project is that every child should be encouraged to read and enjoy reading. We connect our community through sharing knowledge, cultures, ideas, and the joy of reading from picture books. We believe that “One book” means “One love” to children. By the end of 2015, we had received more than 250 picture books from 30 countries and regions. We are delighted to see such an enthusiastic response from our communities and universities. In addition, it seems the citizens love this idea, because people bring books from their journeys one after another. Children eagerly ask parents: “Read for me, I love it.” They find that reading is full of fun. We are encouraged by the support we have received. It will further strengthen our commitment to advance children’s reading.
A Chievements of The Project:
This project has earned recognition and received positive responses from the board of Feng Chia University and 150,000 alumni of the university by January, 2016. People brought many aesthetic and wonderful picture books from all over the world, even from the polar regions of Alaska. Furthermore, people who living abroad in places such as New Zealand and the United Kingdom sent local picture books to Taiwan. In addition, a child under five years old, whose parents chose picture books for him while they were traveling in Japan, brought the books back to Taiwan. This program has received about 610 picture books from nearly 30 countries around the world so far. In addition to enriching the collections of the library, through this project, we hope to broaden children's horizons, motivate them to read books, expand children’s worldview, and last but not least, deliver our love to them though the gift of reading and learning.
Content of the project:
Not every child can go abroad to see the outside world. However, picture books are borderless. Although there are language barriers, we can still convey the authors' intention to children through reading picture books.
To make reading without boundaries and broaden children's horizons, we expect that everyone can put one picture book into their luggage and bring it back for children while they are traveling. Reading is borderless, and we hope that everyone can accompany children by reading picture books, and passing on their wisdom.
Besides, we encourage that every book donor not only sign their names on the cover of picture book, but also share their book reviews and briefly their traveling experiences. In addition to reading the stories from picture books, children and their parents will see the travelling experiences and the book reviews of the book donors. Douliu City Library will collect these reflections and travel notes into book form, as these are all the blessings of book donors, which are priceless for our library.

This public service activity evoked a number of responses, and I am delighted to see the enthusiasm of the citizens who donate the picture books for children. This is absolutely the happiest and the most meaningful thing I have done ever!

Picture books can help children to experience the different cultures of different countries very specifically, even in their art or colors, even through their industries or local customs. Picture books can present everything vividly, so I think this project is really interesting. Through reading picture books, you don't need to go abroad. You can experience the most splendid part of a country. So if you go abroad, I hope you can take some time to bring picture books back for children. It can open children's world view when they are reading picture books. Thank you!
Traveling in a foreign country makes you uniquely aware of the world and of your own emotions...
And picture books can present the characteristics of different cultures.
When you are traveling, please bring a picture book back.
It can not only open children's world view when they are reading picture books,
but you can also spread your kindness and love through participating in this activity.
